- Why the industry uses them: EDTA is a low-cost industrial additive that acts like a metal magnet. It traps calcium or magnesium ions present in formulation water to artificially prevent low-end formulas from spoiling, changing color, or losing their transparency over months.
- Why we exclude them: EDTA is extremely poorly biodegradable. Once rinsed off, it passes through wastewater treatment plants without being destroyed, recaptures heavy metals in rivers, and permanently pollutes aquatic ecosystems. It is formally banned by the ecological standard ECOCERT COSMOS. For all these reasons, you will not find it at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Benzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon derived from petrochemicals, widely used in heavy industry as a solvent to extract raw materials or synthesize complex ingredients in an ultra-economical way.
- Why we exclude them: Benzene is a recognized systemic toxicant for blood cells and bone marrow. To radically eliminate any risk of industrial contamination or residual traces in our bottles, we strictly prohibit benzene and its derivatives. This requirement for absolute cleanliness is at the heart of our partner production plant, proudly B Corporation certified for its high ethical and environmental standards. For all these reasons, you won't find it at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Benzophenone and its derivatives are used by the conventional industry as low-cost masking agents and stabilizers. Mass-market brands use them as a chemical shield to protect the formula itself from UV rays. This prevents the product's color, appearance, or smell from altering or turning yellow when stored in cheap transparent bottles exposed under store neon lights. It is also incorporated into sunscreens as a very economical synthetic UV filter.
- Why we exclude them: Benzophenone is a known endocrine disruptor and a powerful allergen, responsible for a large number of skin reactions and sensitizations. Health safety agencies have issued strict warnings since 2011 to drastically limit its use. Beyond the major risks to your health, this substance has a catastrophic environmental impact: it accumulates irreversibly in tropical waters, poisons corals, and directly contributes to the bleaching and destruction of coral reefs.
- Why the industry uses them: Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) are synthetic antioxidants at a negligible cost. They are injected into conventional formulas to prevent poor-quality oils or petrochemical fats from going rancid, allowing stocks to be stored for years in warehouses.
- Why we exclude them: BHA is classified as a possible carcinogen and recognized as an endocrine disruptor. BHT is strongly suspected of organic toxicity (liver, kidneys) due to repeated exposure. The ECOCERT COSMOS specifications formally prohibit them. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses it: This synthetic preservative with antimicrobial properties is frequently combined with other molecules to artificially extend the shelf life of bulk emulsions and prevent low-cost creams stored in warehouses from separating.
- Why we exclude it: Chlorphenesin has muscle relaxant properties and is a highly sensitizing agent for the epidermis, responsible for numerous contact dermatitis and skin irritations. It is completely banned by our ECOCERT COSMOS organic purity charter. For all these reasons, you will not find it at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: These synthetic chemical compounds are used as cheap pH adjusters or industrial foaming agents. They allow for instant correction of acidity or artificially increase the foam of unbalanced cleansing formulas.
- Why we exclude them: In contact with certain preservatives or nitrogen-rich ingredients, ethanolamines react and form nitrosamines, chemical substances classified among the most powerful carcinogens for the liver and kidneys. They are completely prohibited by the ECOCERT COSMOS standard. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Synthetic chemical filters (Oxybenzone, Octinoxate...) absorb sun rays instead of the skin. They are very cheap, transparent, and allow the industry to incorporate sun protection into day creams without compromising the texture, at the expense of the marine environment.
- Why we exclude them: These filters penetrate the skin barrier, enter the bloodstream, and act as powerful endocrine disruptors. In the sea, they dissolve the protective layer of coral reefs, causing their immediate bleaching and death. They are formally excluded by the ECOCERT COSMOS charter. For all these reasons, you won't find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses it: The conventional industry uses crude wheat derivatives and low-quality gluten as cheap fillers, thickeners, or binders. This allows them to give consistency and fake the texture of mass-produced creams and emulsions at a lower cost, without providing any benefit to the skin.
- Our approach and transparency: To ensure maximum skin tolerance on the most sensitive areas, all our face and body care products are formulated 100% gluten-free. However, for our hair care products, we refuse to compromise on performance: we incorporate hydrolyzed wheat proteins. This is not a cheap filler ingredient, but a high-end active ingredient certified by ECOCERT COSMOS, whose molecular structure is cut to penetrate deep into the hair fiber to fortify and restructure it.
For all these reasons, gluten as a bulk binder is banned from our skin care products at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: These are simply by-products of the petroleum industry, recycled by conventional cosmetics at almost no cost. These mineral oils (Paraffinum Liquidum, Petrolatum) serve as an inert filler base to create an occlusive plastic film on the skin's surface, mimicking a false impression of hydration.
- Why we exclude them: These petroleum oils have strictly zero biological value (zero vitamins, zero nutrients). They act like cling film: they clog pores (comedogenic), disrupt the skin's natural self-regulation mechanism, and come from a polluting fossil industry. They are rigorously prohibited by the reference label ECOCERT COSMOS. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Irradiation involves passing plant raw materials under Gamma or X-rays. It is an expeditious and very economical industrial sterilization method for treating batches of poor-quality plants or those heavily contaminated with bacteria due to poor harvesting or faulty storage.
- Why we exclude them: This shock treatment destroys the internal molecular structure of botanical extracts. It annihilates vitamins, breaks down natural antioxidants, and completely denatures the real benefits of plants for your skin. The ECOCERT COSMOS specifications formally prohibit it. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Microplastics and liquid polymers (such as carbomers or crosspolymers) have been on the long list of controversial ingredients closely monitored by authorities for several years. These plastic particles are considered "microplastics" when their size is 5 millimeters or smaller. They are present in cosmetics for several reasons, including economic advantage, as they are inexpensive synthetic raw materials, but also to enhance sensoriality, just like silicones, which are plastic materials.
- Why we exclude them: The controversy surrounding them is not primarily for health reasons; rather, these particles are concerning for the environment. Once rinsed and discharged into our wastewater treatment systems, they spread into natural aquatic environments and become a danger to biodiversity. They are ingested by fish and also end up in the water we drink, thereby becoming a potential health problem. For complete environmental consistency, they are formally excluded by the ECOCERT COSMOS label. For all these reasons, you will not find them in ALOELIS® products.
- Why the industry uses them: These ultra-powerful synthetic biocides were massively adopted by the mass industry to eradicate bacteria at a very low cost after the banning of certain parabens, without having to nobly rethink the preservation architecture of formulas.
- Why we exclude them: These molecules have triggered a global epidemic of skin allergies and eczema, to the point of being firmly proscribed by dermatologists and banned by the organic certification standard ECOCERT COSMOS. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Nanoparticles are used to artificially alter the physical properties of low-cost raw materials. In conventional sunscreens, they allow low-quality mineral filters to become completely transparent upon application, avoiding the "white cast" effect without having to invest in clean and noble formulation technologies.
- Why we exclude them: Due to their infinitesimally small size (one billionth of a meter), nanoparticles cross the biological barriers of our epidermis with disconcerting ease. They accumulate in organs and generate cellular oxidative stress, the long-term effects of which sorely lack scientific evidence. The ECOCERT COSMOS standard categorically rejects them. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: The mass cosmetics industry massively uses plant derivatives (soy, corn, rapeseed) from intensive agrochemical farming. Genetic manipulation increases industrial yields and drastically lowers the cost of raw materials at the expense of nature.
- Why we exclude them: GMOs cause a dramatic loss of biodiversity and encourage the intensive use of synthetic pesticides. Our commitment to life is reflected in 100% GMO-free formulas and rigorous traceability validated within our certified B Corporation production facility. For all these reasons, you won't find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Parabens are universal synthetic preservatives at minimal cost. The mass industry loves them because they cost almost nothing, effectively block bacteria, and allow products to be stored for years on shelves without moving an inch.
- Why we exclude them: Parabens are major endocrine disruptors capable of mimicking natural estrogens and disrupting the hormonal system, with strong suspicions regarding reproductive health. They are formally prohibited by the international standard ECOCERT COSMOS, to which all our formulas strictly conform. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Lab-created artificial fragrances allow for odor standardization at a ridiculous cost compared to natural essences, while masking the unpleasant smell of basic chemical ingredients. The industry adds synthetic musks (nitro or polycyclic) and phthalates to artificially fix the scent on the skin for hours.
- Why we exclude them: Synthetic fragrances conceal hundreds of unlisted chemical compounds that are the number one cause of allergies, irritations, and migraines, in addition to accumulating persistent pollutants in the body. ALOELIS® exclusively uses aromatic fractions and extracts of 100% natural origin, rigorously validated to comply with the strictest international standards of the IFRA (International Fragrance Association). For all these reasons, you won't find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are introduced into conventional formulas for their absolute artificial resistance to water and sebum (waterproof or transfer-proof products), prioritizing a persistent marketing promise at the expense of skin physiology.
- Why we exclude them: Nicknamed "forever chemicals," PFAS have chemical bonds that are impossible for nature or the body to break down. They irreversibly accumulate in our tissues for life. Excluded by the strict standards of ECOCERT COSMOS, we have zero tolerance for them. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: PEGs (Polyethylene glycols) and PPGs are emulsifiers and binders of purely petrochemical origin. Ultra-economical, they allow water and oil to bind effortlessly, ensuring perfect texture homogeneity at a lower cost.
- Why we exclude them: Their chemical synthesis process (ethoxylation) is heavy, extremely polluting, and uses a highly toxic and carcinogenic gas: ethylene oxide. Furthermore, PEGs create artificial skin permeability, forcing it to absorb impurities from the environment. They are formally prohibited by ECOCERT COSMOS. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: In conventional cosmetics, phthalates are primarily used as alcohol denaturants or low-cost fixatives. They allow low-end synthetic fragrances to last for many hours on the skin, thus masking the poor quality of the raw materials used.
- Why we exclude them: Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors that massively interfere with the hormonal system. Although Europe restricts their use, they remain common due to contamination or in imported products. At ALOELIS®, all our olfactory compositions are rigorously audited and certified compliant with the standards of the IFRA (International Fragrance Association), guaranteeing the total absence of phthalates. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses it: Following legitimate bad press for parabens, mass-market brands rushed to phenoxyethanol. This very inexpensive synthetic solvent-preservative keeps creams sterile at low doses and easily integrates into any aqueous texture without formulation effort.
- Why we exclude it: Phenoxyethanol is classified as a notorious allergen and is toxic to the blood and liver. Health authorities also severely restrict its use in products for children. Subject to the rigorous specifications of ECOCERT COSMOS, our formulas definitively exclude this substance to respect the deep sensitivity of your skin. For all these reasons, you will not find it at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Lab-created artificial fragrances allow for odor standardization at a fraction of the cost of natural essences, while also masking the unpleasant smell of basic chemical ingredients. The industry adds synthetic musks to artificially fix the scent for hours.
- Why we exclude them: Synthetic fragrances contain hundreds of unlisted chemical compounds that are the number one cause of allergies and migraines. Synthetic musks (nitro or polycyclic) accumulate irreversibly in nature and in the body. - Why the industry uses them: Azo or synthetic dyes, coal tar, and Carbon Black (CI 77266) are pigments derived from heavy chemistry that allow for dark and intense shades at an unbeatable price, disregarding natural mineral purity.
- Why we exclude them: These synthetic pigments present high risks of heavy metal contamination (lead, arsenic). Carbon Black is a potential carcinogen by inhalation and is highly irritating to sensitive skin. They are strictly prohibited by the rigorous ECOCERT COSMOS standard. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
We only use mineral pigments.
- Why the industry uses them: Synthetic pure retinol is a star anti-aging active in conventional cosmetics. Very inexpensive in its synthetic form, it allows brands to display a strong and marketable promise despite the harshness of its side effects on the epidermis.
- Why we exclude them: Synthetic retinol is highly unstable to air and light, and is severely aggressive for the skin (redness, burning sensations, intense peeling, dangerous photosensitization). We prefer noble and skin-friendly plant-based alternatives. For all these reasons, you will not find it at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses it: This synthetic chemical compound is used as a colouring agent or as a powerful keratolytic peeling agent in aggressive anti-blemish treatments to force the skin to peel artificially at low cost.
- Why we exclude them: Resorcinol is a proven endocrine disruptor that alters the synthesis of thyroid hormones. It is also a major skin sensitiser, classified among the substances causing severe allergic reactions to the immune system of the epidermis. For all these reasons, you will not find it at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: It's purely a matter of financial profitability. The conventional industry uses low-cost ingredients, solvents, or preservatives because they cost almost nothing to produce. These chemical compounds help stabilize mass production and maximize profit margins, while overlooking long-term toxicity.
- Why we exclude them: We apply an absolute precautionary principle. Any substance classified or suspected of being Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, or Reprotoxic (CMR) by international scientific bodies is banned from our laboratories. Our production ecosystem, rigorously audited by Bureau Veritas, guarantees total safety. We refuse to cut corners on your cellular health or reproductive system to inflate industrial margins. For all these reasons, you won't find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Silicones are the perfect industrial "cover-up". These synthetic polymers derived from petroleum and silicon cost next to nothing. They provide a completely artificial slip and velvety feel on the surface, deceiving the consumer by giving an instant illusion of shine on hair and softness on skin, while masking the poor quality of the formulas.
- Why we exclude them: Silicones act like an invisible plastic film that suffocates the skin, clogs pores, and saturates the hair fiber over repeated washes, preventing real nourishing active ingredients from penetrating. Non-biodegradable, siloxanes dramatically accumulate in the body and the environment. They are strictly prohibited by the ECOCERT COSMOS standard. For all these reasons, you will not find them at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: Aggressive sulfates such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are excluded from our formulation charter. Known for their strong detergent power, they can strip away some of the lipids naturally present on the skin's surface and promote feelings of dryness and discomfort.
- Our alternative: Compliant with the requirements of the ECOCERT COSMOS standard. For our hair care range, we have exclusively selected Sodium Coco-Sulfate (SCS), a surfactant of vegetable origin derived from coconut. Although it belongs to the sulfate family, Sodium Coco-Sulfate has an extremely gentle profile, far removed from conventional sulfates, when integrated into a balanced formulation.
Combined with excellent moisturizing and protective active ingredients, as we offer, for example, it provides a generous lather, effective cleansing, and excellent comfort of use.
Our goal is not to eliminate all cleansing efficacy, but to preserve the natural balance of the scalp, respect the hair fiber, and offer a sensory experience without resorting to the aggressive sulfates traditionally used in the vast majority of shampoos.
- Why the industry uses them: Massively used in conventional hygiene products, aluminum salts react with skin water to form physical plugs that mechanically block pores and the natural sweating process at a lower cost, with no physiological consideration.
- Why we exclude them: Blocking perspiration is biologically unsound, as the body needs to eliminate its toxins. Aluminum is a neurotoxin suspected of being able to migrate through the skin barrier and accumulate harmfully in the body. Our organic purity charter totally excludes it. For all these reasons, you will not find it at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses it: Talc is a low-level mineral filler, massively exploited by the mass industry to opacify, mattify textures or add softness at a lower cost in powders and emulsions.
- Why we exclude them: Geologically, talc deposits often coexist with asbestos deposits. Conventional talc presents a major risk of cross-contamination by asbestos fibers, which are strict carcinogens. By ethical and safety choice, our supply chain and our industrial protocols – audited by Bureau Veritas – exclude this material. For all these reasons, you will not find it at ALOELIS®.
- Why the industry uses them: These extremely powerful yet low-cost synthetic antibacterial and antifungal agents are used in conventional soaps and cleansing gels to radically sanitize mass-produced industrial formulas.
- Why we exclude them: Triclosan penetrates the epidermis, bioaccumulates in tissues, and acts as a proven endocrine disruptor, altering thyroid and sex hormones. Its massive release also contributes to the global development of antibiotic resistance. It is prohibited by the ECOCERT COSMOS standard. For all these reasons, you will not find it at ALOELIS®.
